Fit Feels Good.

Feeling healthy is an important part of your life. Feeling fit and healthy go hand in hand and can sometimes be harder to achieve then one realises.

Now there are many levels of fitness from average to peak performance and our diet, exercise and commitment levels will vary depending on what end of the fit scale you’re on.

Now that is plainly obvious right, well it should be, however in reality it actually isn’t!

So why am I saying this? Well take a look around you and you will see where I am coming from. Let’s take 2 examples of the scale shall we!

Average Fitness Level

man sitting in chair near window working late
  • will consume up to 40% more calories than needed
  • will consume more processed/convenience food then recommended
  • will consume less water than recommended
  • spend less time doing healthy activity
  • does not recognise unhealthy weight gain
  • rarely understands fat to body mass ratio
  • Spends less time and money maintaining their fitness.
  • end up being overweight and unfit by age 50
  • are at higher risk of developing type 2 adult diabetes by age 35

Generalised statements taken from many information sources, but on the whole most people who are in the average fit range have not had to work hard to get there and take their fitness for granted.

Peak Fitness Level

man riding a bicycle - training
  • will only consume the calories their body needs
  • will consume less processed food and more raw foods
  • will consume slightly above the recommended water requirements
  • spend more time being physically active
  • recognises any unhealthy weight gain
  • understand their fat to body mass ratio
  • spend more money and time maintaining their fitness
  • generally look younger and are healthier by age 50
  • are in the low risk category of developing diabetes by 35

Being fit is and always has been a way for any of us to fend of health issues as we age. Staying fit is also linked with a lower risk of developing health complaints that are growing at an alarming rate in today’s fast paced heavily processed food driven society.

Now before you screw your nose up and walk away saying “I am not an Olympic sports person I don’t need this shit”, take a long deep breath and exhale your negative thoughts.

Now based on your current fitness level and your lifestyle today, picture yourself at age 50, 60, 70 or even 80, be honest don’t fool yourself, what health issues do you have now; even minor ones, they will get worse as you age if you don’t do something about your fitness level whilst you still can.

If you consume a high processed diet, drink alcohol excessively (even if it is only sometimes) and your physical activity is minimal, then you could be at a higher risk of developing health problems as each year goes by.

Things you can to Increase Fitness Levels

I don’t have the time – make time as not having enough time is a common excuse used to avoid just about everything. If you have time to sit on your but at the pub for some after work drinks, you have time to work on your fitness.

Replace the heavily processed foods – in your grocery cart. Processed food are carbohydrates and they register in your body as sugar. So a diet high in processed foods is also a diet high in the wrong kinds of sugars.

Steer Clear of Empty Calories –  Avoid buying foods that say low in sugar, low fat and diet, most of these products are heavily processed and full of empty calories. You will feel hungry faster after consuming these types of foods.

Choose High Protein or High Fibre Snacks – snacks that are high in protein or fibre and whole foods will do a better job of keeping you feeling more satisfied. Snacks like a handful of nuts and seeds or an apple or banana. Even a glass of full cream milk, cow, goat or even coconut are a better choice than a biscuit or muesli bar.

Drink Plenty of Water – Drink plenty of water at least 250 mls -1 cup first thing in the morning. Preferably filtered water if you can, but drink plenty of it. Between 2 – 3 litres a day depending on physical activity and weather but a minimum of 2 litres is your aim. Water is a natural cleanser and will help reduce body odour when consumed on a daily basis.

Choose to Stand – Stand-up when possible and make a conscious effort to tighten the muscles through-out your body, flexing each one a few time and move, this keeps the blood flowing and reduces the risk of pooling and clots forming.

By doing a few extra things that are good for you each and every day you will increase your fitness level over time. The more exercise you get is also very crucial to your fitness and health.

Avoid the trappings of society like convenient take-way foods like burger, fries, pizza and do-nuts. It’s not that you can’t have them at all just not in excess and on every other day of the week.

It goes without saying avoid consuming excessive amounts of alcohol ever as this is extremely dangerous for both your heart and liver. A small occasional glass of Red Wine is okay but remember not every day and no more then one small one just to be on the safe side.

Back Pain – Do you suffer from it?

Back pain, not something we like or want to discuss. Yet Back Pain affects over 60% of the world’s population at some time in their life and at variable levels of severity.

I was  and still am at times a back pain sufferer and I don’t like it, no I don’t, not one little bit and I am fairly certain you don’t either.

Now I am not a Back Pain specialist and I don’t hold any medical degree in this matter. I share my own experience with back pain and feelings of others who suffer back pain, so this is where my advice and information on this real problem is going to be based. Just everyday ordinary people who have to deal with back pain on a daily basis.

My Back Pain Story

About 10 years ago I suffered an injury to my lower back during a rather unwanted violent event. I still remember that moment so vividly it makes me cringe.

I can still feel the moment that pain shot through me at a crippling rate, the immense pain, like someone had taken a sharp steel rod, drove it into my lower back and connected it to the mains electricity supply, oh it was sickening, debilitating and I was doing all I could to control my breathing and not allow the tears to stream down my face.

I was in so much pain I just wanted to die and I sure as hell could not move enough to drive the car. I managed to make it home with the help of some friends.

It was a Saturday evening and I was in no shape to sit in a hospital emergency waiting room for 6 hours, the pain was so excruciating and by this stage I needed assistance just to walk and dress.

I sat down with a bottle of scotch and some over the counter pain pills and went to work on becoming so intoxicated I would barely feel the pain. Stupid yes I know but at the time that was the only logic I could come up with in my extremely fragile state after the events of the evening.

I managed to successfully induce an alcohol comatose state of sleep, but the next day man did I feel it, I knew I needed medical attention. Now to cut a long story short, yes there was severe damage that would be long term, and so began my life on morphine, prescription codeine and copious amounts of alcohol to go with it.

Not a great way to live life as any of you would agree, but when you become a back pain sufferer to the point where you have to get your daughter to help you stand up, just to get off the toilet! your life pretty much sucks, depression hits you coupled with constant pain and limited physical movement and before you know it you become comfortable being a recluse and consuming more and more prescription pain pills with alcohol and the nasty cycle begins.

Desperation and Back Pain

Long term back pain sufferers do start to become desperate and we try all sorts of weird, wonderful and untested methods to try and alleviate the constant pain that we feel has crippled our lives. We will search high and low for anything that is a better solution to all the drugs we constantly take just to function at some level of normality.

Late night info-commercials become your friend and before you know it your funds have been used up on useless products that did more harm than good. Now I am not saying it is all bad and some back pain sufferers do find something that works better for them than the 100 prescription pills they take in a week.

More often then not it is costly and just causes more pain.

What Worked For Me

After trying many things from physiotherapy to acupuncture, machines and gadgets very little did anything to ease the pain in my lower back and many times over the years I would revert back to the prescription drugs just so I could go to work and appear to function as a valuable member of society.

That was until I came across Forever Living Products. I was already a member of the Forever Living Products Company and I had occasionally purchased some of the product here and there but like so many other people I always gave excuses to myself for not purchasing the product and giving it a try.

I listened to the hype from the media and medical professionals saying that the Aloe Vera drinks and nutritional supplements would do nothing to ease my pain, so I never gave them a second thought.

until I had wasted all my money and crushed all my hopes on so many traditional options for back pain that did not work.

Out of options and knowing that the many years of constant heavy medications taken daily with alcohol were sending me to an early grave I decided one day, “enough was enough”.

I went back over the Forever Living Products catalogue and logged onto the website. I started sifting through all the information I could get my hands on. Not just about Forever Living Products but about Aloe Vera in general and what I started to learn about this plant was astounding.

Apart from being the go to plant for treating burns and skin problems, there was a ton of information on the miraculous benefits others were having from drinking the gel from this plant.

The Aloe Vera plant was being hailed as the unknown secret to internal health, helping people with conditions from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) to easing pain in arthritis sufferers and that’s what sparked my hope and intrigue.

I started purchasing a monthly supply of a couple of the Forever Living Products, from myself of course at distributor price. Then I set about making sure I developed the habit of taking these products every single day without fail. I was sceptic to say the least and I really didn’t expect to see any magical or miraculous results but I had nothing to lose except the severe pain I had lived with for many years now.

After the first month I noticed a remarkable difference in my general health, my depression wasn’t as bad, my skin and hair were healthier and my pain medication usage was down by around 10%  So I placed another order and continued on.

After 6 months of daily use I was now completely drug free. I no longer needed all the medication for my back pain.

I actually had no more back pain unless I did something really stupid that put stress on the injured area of my back, like lifting something extremely heavy.

Every day I take my Aloe products from Forever Living and have been free from prescription medication for many years now.  Not a day goes by where I am not grateful to Forever Living Products for their business opportunity and most of all the Quality Aloe Vera products that they produce.

My magic bullet for “Back Pain” from Forever Living Products

The 3 core products I use daily without fail to manage my pain are

  1. Freedom2Go– patented, stabilized aloe vera gel, plus Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM, and the sweet taste of antioxidant-rich Pomegranate juice.
  2. Arctic Sea Capsules– each capsule has an EPA content of 225 mg and 150 mg each of DHA and oleic acid, all of which are lacking in most Western diets. The benefits of EPA and DHA include supporting the circulatory system.
  3. Bee Pollen– The nutrients in bee pollen are readily digestible and easily absorbed by the human body. Forever Bee Pollen may assist in maintaining a healthy circulatory, digestive, immune, and nervous system.

                         My go-to for back pain

Now this may not be the answer to your pain management but then again it very well could be but only if you are willing to commit to consuming the drinks each and every day without fail.

No matter what you find helps you if it is better than popping handfuls of heavy drugs daily then I would encourage you to stick with it.

What the doctors often fail to tell us is that the prescription pain medication is not a cure for our pain it is just one way we can manage the pain every day.

They will not tell you it can be addictive and over long periods of time with continued use you are destroying your liver, damaging your stomach lining and will face further complications down the track.

I have shared my experience with you to give you hope and inspire you to find a solution to your back pain management that doesn’t involve the daily taking of heavy duty drugs.

Please feel free to share what you have found that works for you or not worked for you in the comment box below and if you know of others who are suffering from back pain and may benefit from reading my story the share it with them also.

OH NO! Head-Lice Again

Children and Head-lice seem to go hand in hand and is a common global problem that causes any caring parent to cringe. Not only do we know how distressing this can be for our kids, we also know how time consuming the treatments on our child’s head for these nasty insects can be

Many parents feel embarrassed and shame at the fact their child has head-lice. So many parents suffer quietly and make up a fanciful story to explain their absence from work and their child’s absence from school, not realising that it is no reflection at all on their parenting skills.

What most parents don’t realize is, even the cleanest heads can get head-lice !

Parents Private Feelings of Shame

I mean honestly how many parents do you know will sit at a bus stop or in the break room at work and when someone asks how their child is doing will openly smile and say “Oh just great he/she came home from school on Friday and I found head-lice all through their hair”.

Yes well  and if you do voice this you certainly clear the area fast as if you have the plague because if your child has Head-Lice you must have Head-Lice and nobody wants to catch it from you, right!

So we make up a plausible story for everyone’s  benefit, whilst suffering the long arduous agony of having to treat our kids hair by dumping all the harsh chemical “Head Lice Treatments” on them till we find the one that we think has worked, “right” yes and we all know how that works out for us.

It is expensive, stinky, stressful and what’s worse we have no idea if and how much damage we are doing to our kids hair, scalp and health.

So today I am sharing with you 2 Gentle Effective ways to treat “Head Lice” in the whole family right down to the youngest in the family.

The first is the one that I use for my 2 granddaughters, both at school. We live in Queensland Australia, so summer being hot humid and moist giving  Head Lice the perfect breading conditions on any child’s head.

But first I would like to dispel some Myths about Head Lice before moving on to the 2 best natural treatments I feel are available on the market.

Myths about Head Lice

Wrong, total misconception so stop shampooing your kid’s hair daily with commercial grade shampoos destroying their hair and scalp ph balance. They will do a fine job of that themselves when they are older.

Human Head Lice do not infect animals so don’t put them through the horrid chemical bath you do to your child’s head or your liable to make them sick or worse, poison them to death.

Head lice eggs will only fall onto bedding when they are dead or already hatched in the hair. The live head-lice can only survive for about 24 hours away from the human scalp, as they need to feed on scalp tissue and blood every 6 hours to stay alive. So changing sheets and bedding every few hours is not a priority, and this goes for furnishings and carpets as well.

Wrong! most treatments off the shop shelves are pesticides and only kill the already hatched lice, even then it doesn’t always kill them due to the resistance they have built up to the pesticide you are dousing your kid with. Generally it just stuns them long enough for you to go through the hair with a head-lice comb to get them out.

Head-Lice do not fly or jump from head to head as they don’t have wings and their jumping distance is so minimal that it is only when children are hugging, sharing brushes or hats and sitting so close to each other their hair strands are almost touching and that is how the head-lice spread.

Each louse can live for approximately five weeks, but during that lifetime a female can lay up to 120 eggs

They lay their eggs (nits) on the hair shaft around 1.5 cm from the scalp.

head-lice life cycle from egg to adult

The head lice life cycle lasts between 33 and 35 days.

2 Non-Toxic Ways to Treat Head-Lice

Aloe Vera – You can use Aloe Vera to treat head-lice directly from the plant, if you know what species of plant you have and how to prepare the gel or you can use a recognised quality aloe vera based product which is my choice.

Now apart from the great benefits that aloe has for soothing skin what a lot of people don’t know is Aloe Vera is naturally pest resistant. Meaning bugs don’t like it and that goes for head-lice as well.

So I use 3 products from the Forever Living product range which I know are gentle, effective. I use them every year at the start of head-lice season on my grand-kids and we see a virtual nit free season after the first 2 treatments. We love them and swear by them.

Tea Tree Oil

I personally have never used this for Head Lice but after talking with a good friend of mine in New Zealand, Love you Kathleen McKay

I learned that you could not only treat Head Lice with Tea Tree Oil but you can also make up a spray with it and use as a repellent on the kids hair before they go to school as well.

So I asked Kathleen to assist me with putting some information out there about this and as always Kathleen with her big heart and willingness to share sent me an email in response with a link to her blog article she wrote on how she deals with head-lice.

You can check out Kathleen s article here:

Forever Living Aloe Vera Products

1 – Liberally massage our Aloe Vera Gelly through your child’s hair making sure to cover the scalp. Leave in hair for 30 minutes.

2 – Shampoo hair with Aloe Jojoba Shampoo and rinse well.

3 – Apply a good amount of Aloe Jojoba Conditioning Rinse, massage through hair. With head-lice comb, comb through conditioner until all tangles are smoothed, going over each section of hair a couple of times rinsing comb, the head-lice and eggs will easily come out of hair whilst combing.

Combing of hair to remove lice and eggs should only take about 5 minutes (unless hair is very long, thick or curly) rinse well and lightly towel dry hair and comb. Repeat this same process for the next  4 days to ensure complete removal of all eggs and adult lice.

Tea Tree Oil – As used and suggested by my friend Kathleen. This is some of her story.

For years it was like every other week one of the kids would come home with head lice or nits. Weekly the schools were sending home notices for people to check and treat.

I swear these things evolved to become untreatable with the common pesticides so I looked at organics. I was using a product called Nit Enz but even as mild as it was it absolutely reeked. It did the job though.

I did notice in one of the other products there was tea tree oil used with lemon as a preventative. Unfortunately that product has a pesticide in it also.

I did some checking on tea tree oil and found that head lice didn’t like it so I started putting tea tree essential oil in a spray bottle of water, spraying the kids frequently. This has kept them at bay and we haven’t had an infestation for over a year now touch wood.

Am really looking forward to reading the benefits of aloe as I’ve never noticed a scent or odour to aloe.

Final Thoughts

There are probably many other natural and gentle ways to treat head lice that I am unaware of so please share with us in the comments box your experience with head lice and any gentle or natural ways you have found in treating this problem.

I will say from my own experience with my grandchildren and treating their head-lice with the 3 Forever aloe vera products we have not seen those dreaded nits in their hair since.

I do know my daughter uses a spray of vinegar and water to lightly spray inside their school caps to help with repelling the nits and to keep the caps nice and fresh and odour free.  To make this spray it is just 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water.

Aloe Vera – The Facts!

Aloe Vera History

Aloe Vera, often called the Miracle Plant, the Natural Healer, the Burn Plant, goes by many names which have survived 4000 or so years, during which this amazing medicinal herb has benefited mankind.

George Ebers in 1865 first discovered it’s antiquity in an ancient Egyptian papyrus, dated 3500 BC, which was in fact a collection of herbal remedies. Other researchers have since found it was used by both the ancient Chinese and Indian cultures.

Greek and Roman physicians such as Dioscorides and Pliny the Elder used aloe Vera to great effect and legend suggests that Aristotle persuaded Alexander the Great to capture the island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean to get its rich supply of aloe vera plants to heal his wounded soldiers.

The Egyptian Queens Nefertiti and Cleopatra rated it highly as a beauty therapy, for in those days, health and beauty were linked far more than they ever are today.

Over 200 Species of the Aloe Plant

Although there are over 200 species of Aloe Vera, only 3-4 t have medicinal properties. Of these, Aloe Vera Barbadensis (Miller), which is also known as Aloe Vera (Linne), is the most potent.

This is also the one we use in the production of all our aloe products.

Aloe Vera Barbadensis is a succulent, looking rather like a cactus but is in fact a member of the Lily family, related to the onions, garlic and asparagus.

It reaches maturity in 4 years when the content of its leaves, a mixture of inner gel and outer sap can be harvested, preserved and bottled to produce a product that is as near to the natural aloe vera plant juice as we can get.

To benefit from Aloe Vera, the gel can be taken internally for its nutritional effect or it can be combined with other ingredients to produce topical creams and lotions to nourish and improve the quality of the skin.

Why – Where – How Aloe Vera Works

Why does Aloe Vera Work?

Aloe works by providing a rich cocktail of nutritional elements whose combined action and balance, produce a more powerful effect together, then one would expect from the addition of each individual components. This is because they work as a team, enhancing each other’s effect – this is known as synergism. It also has adaptogenic properties- which means that the different individuals take from it what they need, therefore the benefits vary from person to person.

Adaptogenic is derived from Adaptogen meaning:
Definition:  any of various natural substances that work through the adrenal glands to produce adjustments in the body to combat stress and increase resistance to stress, and which usually produce no side effects.
Example:  Adaptogens such as the herbs garlic, ginseng, echinacea, ginkgo, goldenseal, and taheebo are natural substances that benefit the body.
Etymology:  Greek adapto ‘to adjust’ and the suffix gen ‘producing’

So if I can sum up how Aloe Vera works in laymen terms it would be that, Aloe Vera is a nutritional plant that in its entirety supplies our body, when consumed internally, with the nutritional building blocks we need to function at a higher level of health and fitness. Thus in doing so enables us to heal from sickness and injury more quickly allowing our body and immune system to go about the jobs it was designed to do.

Where does it Work?

Because of its nutritional qualities and antioxidant properties, helps firstly to prevent injury to epithelial tissues-(Epithelial tissue covers the outside of the body and lines organs and cavities. Epithelial tissue helps to protect organisms from micro-organisms, injury, and fluid loss.) And when they are damaged, consuming Aloe Vera can promote healing.

Antioxidants fight the destructive “free radicals”, the unstable compounds produced by our metabolism and are found in environmental pollutants. They are thought to cause a variety of ailments including some cancers as well as contributing towards the ageing process.

An epithelium is an anatomical term defined as follows: An epithelium is a layer of cells that covers the body or lines a cavity that connects with it.

Our largest epithelium is our skin but also included are the lining of the gut, the bronchial tubes and the genital tract. No wonder Aloe Vera works just as well on damaged skin as it does on , say, an inflamed bowel or in asthma.

So How does Aloe Vera Work ?

The inner leaf gel from Aloe has proven to deliver natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions combined within its nutritional constituents promote cell growth and therefore increased healing rates.

However it is not only helpful for people with problems, most people taking it on a daily basis report a greater sense of well-being, they just feel better or they report feeling calmer and less anxious with more energy.

Dr Peter Atherton stated that “he believed this is due to Aloe Vera’s effect on the immune system”, which you may say becomes balanced or fine-tuned and therefore more efficient at defending the body from attacks of virus and bacterial nature.

Aloe also contains Amino acids which are used in every cell of your body to build the proteins you need to survive. All organisms need some proteins, whether they are used in muscles or as simple structures in the cell membrane. Even though all organisms have differences, they still have one thing in common: the need for basic chemical building blocks-Amino Acids

Inside the Aloe Leaf

Aloe Vera gel contains over 75 known ingredients which can be divided into the following groups

Group One

It contains a wide range, but the most important ones are the antioxidant vitamins C and E and beta-carotene, the precursor of Vitamin A. It is also one of the few plant sources in the world of Vitamin B12 – so very useful to vegetarians and vegans

These include magnesium manganese, zinc, copper, chromium, calcium, sodium, potassium and the important antioxidant selenium.

The human body requires 22 amino acids, the building blocks of proteins and Aloe Vera gel provides 22 of them. More importantly, it provides seven of the eight essential amino acids that cannot be manufactured by the body and which therefore have to be consumed as food

These include the important muco-polysaccharides which act on the immune system as well as helping detoxify the body

Group Two

Lipase’s and proteases which break down food and aid in digestion.

The three main types, act as powerful anti-inflammatory agents.

This woody substances bestows on Aloe Vera its penetrative ability to reach deep into the skin.

These are soapy substances that exert a powerful anti-microbial effect against bacteria, viruses, fungi and yeasts such as Candida or Thrush

The most important ones being aloin and emodin, together they are strong painkillers and are acknowledged to possess anti-bacterial and viruscidal activity. In their pure form they are very powerful laxatives.

Is using the Aloe Leaf Rind Beneficial

There is no real evidence to suggest the whole leaf aloe, which includes the rind but is filtered and usually concentrated, is any more effective than just the inner leaf gel or sap alone. However what is most important is the quality and quantity of aloe in the product being sold.

Unfortunately many products on the market labelled as “Aloe Vera Juice” may contain only a small amount or portion of the actual inner leaf gel.

If in doubt, look for the Seal of Approval of the International Aloe Science Council. This is an independent American regulatory body which monitors the quantity and quality of aloe in products. If their Seal of Approval actually appears on the container (not simply a claim) it is a bona fide aloe product.

Aloe Vera is not a panacea for all ills and there’s no magic about it.
I believe it works only in the two areas mentioned previously – epithelial tissue and the immune system.

This is largely backed up by anecdotal evidence, as many thousands of people over the centuries have reported benefit for various skin complaints such as eczema, psoriasis, ulcers, burns, acne even stings and bites.

Some people have reported they found relief for bowel disorders such as colitis, diverticulitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. However these are personal testimonial accounts and not yet backed up by documented scientific evidence.

Other conditions resulting from a disordered immune system such as arthritis, asthma and ME (post viral fatigue syndrome) and LE (lupus) have improved after a regular ingestion of Aloe Vera gel.

Aloe Vera therefore has a complimentary role to play in the management of various conditions. It is very important however that people should always seek the advice of their Doctor when the diagnosis is in doubt or where a condition does not improve.

Self-diagnosis can be extremely dangerous as many serious conditions can mimic more simple ones. As with any changes to your health management plan, be it exercise diet or nutritional supplements, it is always wise to consult with your doctor.

He is currently the Senior Partner of a training practice with a special interest in dermatology, having spent 3 years working in a dermatology department of a district hospital. This interest combined with an understanding of the power of herbal remedies gained whilst serving in the East and India led to his fascination with Aloe Vera.
